Introduction
We have started a 5-day in service devoted to exploring ways to use technology as a tool in the area of reading. The first day we reviewed the components of reading and how they work together to construct the reading process. For the first assignment tell of an experience or two you have had using technology as a tool for reading. It does not have to be teaching reading. It can be from experiences in content or elective areas.

The day after our first session, I shared the read aloud site on readingplanet.
My class watched "Mona Lisa" in silence. (That never happens.) They loved it!! I shared it with other teachers and our "tech guy". The website is now included as a reading resourse on our school website.

The day after our first session I shared the story line on line web- site with a few teachers in my school. Their comments were "I wish I would have known about the Reading and the Role of Technology workshop."
Unfortunately I wasn't able to share this wonderful website with my students since the computers in our school were not working. As soon as the computers are working and ready to go I will share this website with them. I am sure they will enjoy it!!!
My experience for the use of technology in the classroom is two part:
Use of the internet for students to conduct research on 9-week projects.
Second, the use of Reading Plus and FCAT Explorer.
Great tools implemneting technology.
Thanks.

After the first session, I was very excited to use all the different websites we were introduced to with my students. Unfortunately, I have not being able to yet because the computers are not working in our school. As soon as the media center is available, I will take my class to explore all the new sites!
Our school's computers are not working due to the painting of the building. Due to this it has been very difficult to even turn our grades in. I'm hoping that once the computers are up and running I will be able to use one of the many websites that we talked about in class.
I have one computer in my classroom. Unfortunately, it has not been working for two weeks due to problems with the electricity and the server. It would be extremely nice to have at least five computers that the students could use to enhance the curriculum. We learn so many interesting sites that the students can use, but we don't have the hardware available to accomplish this.
I have been using technology in my classes for a while. The first time was when I was an ESOL teacher and the Jostens program, now called Compass. I have also worked worked with the FCAT Explorer for both Reading and Math.
I was thrilled to find websites that can enhance our teaching reading. I was unable to access any website due to technical difficulties in our school. I was able to search for rubrics that I can use to grade different aspects of reading and language arts.
Immediately after our session I was able to use the website of edhelper.com. I especially liked and used the graphic organizer for my reading lesson this week!!
Last year, while teaching the story The Polar Express, I logged on to site Storylineonline.com so my children could hear Lou Diamond Philips read the story. Even though there weren't any special effects or anything of that nature, just being able to huddle around the computer and listen to the story made the entire experience come alive for them. They wanted to hear it over and over again! I will most certainly use this site in the future for other stories we may read as a class.

The way I utilize reading with technology is through the software programs. My students do Reading Plus to increase fluency and comprehension and the ESOL students demonstrate comprehension using the visuals in Learning Today. Both are excellent programs and the children enjoy doing them.
I can't wait until the computers in my classroom are up and running. I really want to share with my students the website Storylineonline.com.
In the past I have used the computer to read them stories and they loved it.
I am also looking forward to using some of the other websites with them.
I enjoy workshops. I take back with me many new ideas to use in my classroom. I shared some of the websites with my colleagues and they were very impressed. I have used the computer in the classroom with the kids. The students enjoy starfall and I have also used fcrr.org that has lots of student center activities that aid in various areas of instruction at different levels. All of the materials are at your hands complete and ready to use. Just copy and go. Little preparation needed. Check it out.
I really enjoyed visiting the many sites in our first class. Technology is wonderful and opens up a world of information for our students. I wish, however, that I had computers in my room for my students. I teach reading and I think my students would benefit from using computers.
We have had server problems with Gradebook all week and it was very difficult to practice using various web pages we learned about; however, I believe they would be very useful except for the fact that teachers are told to use FCAT Explorer, Riverdeep, Reading Plus and Learning Today for ESE students and then still cover the required curriculum. There is not sufficient time to be in the computer lab and classroom computers are 70% not functioning.
Teachers want to use the internet but are very frustrated that equipment will not permit them to utilize the web sites available. We don't have enough time to teach and then assign these programs when the server's don't cooperate. Just look at the number of comments from participants.
